Worldwide WCDMA/UMTS Subscribers Exceed 50 million

According to a recent announcement by the UMTS Forum, worldwide 3G mobile phone subscriptions have passed 50 million. UMTS/WCDMA users account for approximately 33 million, with Japan leading the way with a total of more than 16.5 million on its WCDMA networks. It is followed by Italy, which has about 6.8 million subscribers on its four UMTS networks, and the UK with four million UMTS users. Currently, worldwide there are 75 UMTS/WCDMA networks and about 180 available handset models. Furthermore, 1x EV-DO subscriptions exceed more than 17 million, the majority of which are in Japan and Korea.
